Drop off unused prescription drugs this Saturday

April 27, 2012|By Meredith Cohn

Have unwanted prescription drugs in your medicine cabinet? Don’t toss them in the trash or leave them to experimenting hands. Drop them off at a designated site on National Drug Take-Back Day this Saturday.

State health officials say abuse of prescription drugs is on the rise -- between 2007 and 2010, the percentage of prescription drug-related admissions to Maryland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration-funded treatment programs nearly doubled, resulting in one in five admissions.

Also, some 2,500 teens across the country now use these drugs to get high for the first time each day, according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. They often get their drugs from the family medicine cabinet or from friends.
