A dog that ran away just an hour after being adopted by journalist Cokie Roberts was found dead Thursday morning.
Officials with Lab Rescue of the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac said the black Labrador had been hit by a car in Bethesda, not far from where she'd been spotted earlier in the week.
"We are so terribly sad about the news,” Roberts said in a statement. “We want to thank all who searched so diligently for Katie, and we are deeply distressed for the family who fostered Katie for three loving months.
Roberts adopted Katie, a former stray, from the rescue on Saturday. The shy and skittish five-year-old pup went missing almost as soon as Roberts got her, taking off north on Bradley Boulevard.
Though several people had spotted the dog and called the rescue, and the missing pet group Dogs Finding Dogs had her sent and was tracking her, it was all too late.
Katie's body was found near Thomas W. Pyle Middle School early Thursday.
