A dozen players with local connections were among the 25 nominees named Wednesday for the 2012 women’s Tewaaraton Award, presented annually to the best player in the college game.
The list includes three players from Maryland – Katie Schwarzmann, Karri Ellen Johnson and Iliana Sanza – as the Terrapins tied North Carolina for the most players to make the last cut before the list is narrowed to five finalists on May 10. Last year's winner, Northwestern attacker Shannon Smith, is among the Top 25 while Schwarzmann was also a finalist.
Marlee Paton from Loyola and Mary Teeters from Towson also were nominated. Teeters, a Centennial graduate, is one of only two goalies on the list along with Penn State’s Dana Cahill, from Mercy.
Eleven of the players graduated from local high schools, including two former Baltimore Sun Players of the Year – Schwarzmann, from Century, and Vanderbilt’s Ally Carey, from John Carroll. Loyola's Paton is from Australia.
The list includes all three Baltimore area players who were on the gold-medal winning U.S. team at the 2007 Under-19 World Championships – Johnson, a Broadneck graduate; Carey; and Virginia’s Josie Owen, a Severn graduate.
The 12th annual men’s and women’s Tewaaraton awards will be presented on May 31 at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington.
