The McDonogh boys lacrosse team watched their four-goal lead vanish quickly in the fourth quarter of Saturday's match against St. Mary's.
But the No. 5 Eagles bounced back in overtime.
Junior midfielder Austin Frederick scored with 54 seconds left in the 4-minute overtime period to lift the Eagles to a 12-11 win over the No.4 Saints in Annapolis.
Frederick finished three goals and three assists, Evan Glaser had four goals and an assist and goalie Nick Doyle stopped 10 shots to help pull out the win. The Eagles improve to 6-5 on the season and 2-2 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association's A Conference, while the Saints (8-4) are even at 2-2 in league play.
After overcoming a two-man down situation earlier in overtime, the Eagles got the ball to Frederick, who won space on the left side and then cranked a low shot past St. Mary's goalie Skyler Morse (12 saves) to decide the outcome.
"I had help from Brinton [Valis]. He played through for me so I could dodge and I tried the five hole," Frederick said. "We had a great bench who kept loud the whole time. Even when they came back, we all stayed loud so we could keep going."
After Robert Clark and Dewey Senft scored consecutive goals late in the third quarter to give the Eagles their biggest lead at 10-6, the Saints showed quickly they had no plans of going away. In a two-minute, 10-second stretch early in the fourth quarter — they got goals from Spencer Coyle, John Kluh, Nate Lewnes and Mike Bonacci to stunningly erase the Eagles' advantage.
With the ball and the momentum, the Saints had two point-blank shots saved by Doyle and when Glaser scored his fourth goal of the game — collecting a feed from Frederick in transition — the Eagles reclaimed an 11-10 lead with 2:54 to play. But the Saints weren't through, getting a goal from Lewnes with 1:48 to play that forced overtime when Frederick provided the final answer.
Lewnes scored three goals to lead the Saints, who also got two goals and an assist from Kluh and Bonacci. Valis also scored two goals for the Eagles.
