Things unseen

April 16, 2012|By John E. McIntyre | The Baltimore Sun

Some of you have commented, vigorously, on the frustrations of attempting to comment at this blog, and have further commented that your comments are then invisible. It is regrettable that, at the current stage of development of the software, the little "Comments" label at the top of the post regularly registers zero when there are in fact comments below that you cannot see.

I lack the nous (from the Greek nous, "practical intelligence") or technic (from the Greek techne, "skill," "applied knowledge"), authority, or even influence to do anything about this, but I can at least bring some comments to the surface.

Item:  At "The difference between God and a doctor," Darla-Jean Weatherford wrote:

The problem with just switching to Professor instead of Doctor is that a growing number of us with PhDs (rhetoric counts, right?) are not professors but merely lecturers or instructors or some other not-professor rank, and the professors are fine calling us "doctor" but get really rankled if we're called "professor."

Some of us are "liberated" from publish-or-perish pressures, but that means we're likely the workhorses keeping the classrooms going. And we did, indeed, jump through the hoops to earn the PhD!

Item: At "A moment of personal triumph," Dahlink2 wrote:

I tried to comment on your "media @#$%" quote, but the blogware prevented me from posting because of "profanity."   !!!!!
That comment registers at the top, but not the second one from Laburger catching me in a typo:
I enjoyed your clever recap of the conference but was surprised that such an esteemed CE made a careless spelling error: Galatoire's not Gallatoire's[Fixed.]Item: At "Busman's holiday," three invisible comments:
Copy Curmudgeon:I will be there, and I'm looking forward to meeting you!
Jonathon Owen: I wish I could be there. It sounds like a lot of fun with some great folks.
StateCircle: It's Friday, and in the office it's a quiet morning. Thought I would take the unusual step of launching Internet Explorer and leaving a reminder that while commenting here went from practical to almost impossible, some of us continue to read every day. And nod our heads slowly. Have a good time at the convention, and a good weekend.
