Bobby DeStefano and Blake Wood team up to strip Mt. St. Joe's… (Gene Sweeney Jr., Baltimore…)
With a tight-knit group of seniors and some talented players behind them, the Severn boys lacrosse team had a good feeling about the potential for a breakthrough season.
Until the No. 8 Admirals delve further into their Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference schedule, it remains to be seen just how much success they can get out of 2012. But so far, it's certainly been so good.
Friday's game against emerging Mount St. Joseph provided another example. The Admirals were a step ahead in every facet against the No. 12 Gaels, getting a three-goal, one-assist performance from senior midfielder Mark Cohen and playing strong team defense in a 11-7 victory, extending their winning streak to 12 games.
Juniors Hunter Gray and Brett Bedard each added two goals and junior goalie Ryan Frey finished with 10 saves as the Admirals (12-1) improved to 2-0 in the MIAA. Mount St. Joseph, who won just three games last season, fell to 10-3 overall and 0-2 in league play.
"It's a good start, but we're not satisfied and we have our goals that we want to accomplish this year," Severn coach Brian Wood said. "It's done mostly with our four senior team captains [Cohen, Blake Wood, Chase Brown, Nick Manis], and we have other seniors that are stepping up and playing well and leading even though they aren't seniors. So we have a great senior class and they lead and everybody else follows their lead."
In a tight first half, the Admirals got a goal from Cohen with four seconds left in the second quarter to take a 7-4 halftime lead. After killing off a one-minute penalty early in the third quarter, they got goals from Mike Dennin and Bedard for a 9-4 lead midway through the quarter that would stick with strong defense keeping the Gaels in check.
"I never really thought we were in total control because Mount St. Joe – give them credit – they fought and they never quit which is what we knew would happen," Wood said. "We were fully prepared for fourth quarters of effort. We withstood their [emotions] and at the end of the day we came up with a victory."
Mount St. Joseph got three goals and an assist from Michael LeClair, and eight saves from goalie Colin Reymann.
