College baseball: Junior left-hander Jimmy Reed allowed just two hits in eight scoreless innings in his first career start, and Maryland (20-12, 4-9 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat North Carolina State (20-12, 4-9), 4-0. Reed, a converted closer, struck out eight. ... Junior catcher Andrew Parker hit two home runs and had four RBIs as Towson routed visiting Old Dominion, 14-5. The Tigers (14-15, 8-5 Colonial Athletic Association) collected a season-high 17 hits overall and scored 13 runs in the first four innings against the Monarchs (10-20, 2-8) after having scored just 16 runs in their previous eight games. ... UMES (6-23, 5-5 MEAC) scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally for a 7-6 win over Coppin State (0-27, 0-6). ... Mark Quaranta hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to help lift host Mount St. Mary's over Long Island University-Brooklyn, 5-1, in the second game of a doubleheader. Josh Winter followed with a homer in the next at-bat for the Mount (10-23, 3-12 Northeast Conference). Thomas Williams allowed three runs (two earned) in a complete-game loss in the first contest as the Mount fell, 3-2, to the Blackbirds (13-18, 5-6). ... Host UMBC (7-19, 0-2 America East) committed 11 errors en route to a 32-14 loss to Maine (14-14, 2-0) in the second game of a doubleheader. The Retrievers also dropped the first game, 9-3.

College swimming and diving: Columbia native Rob Bellamy will join UMBC as an assistant to coach Chad Cradock. Bellamy replaces Brad Green.

Major League Soccer: D.C. United midfielder Lance Rozeboom had successful surgery Thursday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and lateral meniscal tear in his left knee, the team announced. The rookie is expected to miss about six months while recovering.
