Smart meter opponents are dangerous

Printing Kate Kheel's letter "Smart meters are dangerous" (March 24) piece shows it's not the meters but the people who fear them that are dangerous.

Her fear of communication signals is simply unfounded, and her fear of higher utility bills is simply justice for those that continue to waste energy while refusing to manage their demand to match the true cost of electricity throughout the day. Those who are conscious of the hourly fluctuating price of electricity based on demand are tired of paying fixed rates to carry these free-loaders along with their wasteful disregard of the law of supply and demand.

The smart meters will allow conscientious people to avoid high priced electricity by managing our demand through periods of lower cost. We are all in this together. Wasteful fixed-rate consumers have no incentive to match their load with demand and therefore keep all of our prices high. The price during the day can fluctuate as much as a factor of 10-1 to meet the wasteful demands of these blissfully uncaring consumers.

The sooner we get smart meters and the smart grid, the sooner we can control our peak energy demands and peak prices which will benefit us all.
