VFW essay contest winners honored at Port post

Last month at the Port Deposit VFW Post 8185, members from the four posts in District 10 gathered to present awards to the students who placed in the two VFW-sponsored essay contests, "Patriots Pen" for middle schoolers and "Voice of Democracy" for high schoolers.

Initiated by VFWs across Maryland and across the nation, the local winners in the "Voice of Democracy" were: first place was awarded to Philip Chaffee, sponsored by Elkton Post 8175; second place was won by Eric Barton, sponsored by Port Deposit Post 8185; and third place was earned by Jessica Handy, sponsored by Chesapeake City Post 7687. Middle schoolers who placed in the "Patriot's Pen" essay contest were Thomas McCusker, sponsored by North East Post 6027, who earned first place; Grace Williams, sponsored by Chesapeake City Post 7687, winning second place; and Brooke Corbett, sponsored by Elkton Post 8175, capturing third place.

The essay contest winners and their families were treated to dinner on Feb. 19 at the post home on Susquehanna River Road and certificates, checks and savings bonds were given to the teens. Current Cecil County Commissioner Diana Broomell gave the winners citations from the county commissioners. State Chief of Staff Eugene Stewart was on hand for the presentations as well as District 10 officers Dee Russo, Valerie Walls, Cathy Estep, Heather Caleb and Kathy Heaton. Congratulations, all!

Much sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Dennis Citrano, Rising Sun, as he passed away last week.

Happy anniversary to Kathy and David Collette, Perryville, as they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on March 25.

My husband, Rick Bierly, and his twin sister, Karen Crockett, celebrated their birthdays on March 26, as did Craig Jourdan of Harford County and Dorothy Miller of Cecil County.

Taliah Kornegan, granddaughter of Patti Fitt of Perryville, blew out her candles on March 27. Havre de Grace friend Charlie Kennedy added a year to his age on March 27. And our niece, Andrea Crockett Holzman, turned 30 on March 28.

Susie Eaton of Perryville enjoyed birthday greetings on March 29 and Mike Smith Jr. of Colora celebrated his big day on March 30.

The Knights of Columbus Council 2002 will serve its Fish Fry every Friday during Lent from 4 to 7 p.m. at Good Shepherd School, 800 Aiken Ave., Perryville. Enjoy a fish sandwich for $6, steamed shrimp for $9 or the fish and shrimp combo for $9. Come to Good Shepherd for dinner or carry-out today (Friday).

Coming up next month: A public meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Port Deposit Presbyterian Church, 44 S. Main St., to give all interested residents the opportunity to participate in the Port Deposit Transit Feasibility Study. And the Port Deposit Heritage Corporation will hold its annual general meeting on Thursday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Paw Paw Building. All members are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served following the short business meeting and election of officers for 2012.
