All-Metro Boys Indoor Track Coach of the Year: Lutalo Bakari, Digital Harbor

March 23, 2012

Bakari has always done a good job of getting as much as possible out of the Rams, and this winter he guided them to the Baltimore City title, a share of the Class 3A East region crown and a tie for fourth at the state meet.

Digital Harbor won the city for the second time in five years and tied Hereford for first in a tough region. After finishing fourth in Class 2A last year, the Rams moved up to 3A but didn't miss a beat.

Bakari is known for being one of the more vocal and motivational coaches, always standing right by the track and cheering on his athletes during races.

He had George Flaviano, an All-Metro first-team pick, to lead the way, but the Rams had a number of other strong athletes who gave Bakari a strong lineup throughout.

"[This] was a direct result of young men accepting their identified role that they play on the team and being responsible for the outcome," Bakari said.
