A Jamaican man pleaded guilty in Maryland federal court Thursday to having sex with a young girl who was vacationing with her family on a cruise ship where he worked, prosecutors said.

Fabian Palmer, 25, was working for Royal Caribbean Cruises, assigned to the ship "Enchantment of the Seas," in December 2011 when he sexually abused a 14-year-old girl, according to a statement from Maryland's U.S. Attorney's Office.

The victim and her family boarded the ship in Baltimore and Palmer became friendly with her, prosecutors said, and they occasionally exchanged handwritten notes.

Near the end of the trip, Palmer invited the girl to meet him one night in the gym and spa area of the ship, the statement said. He took her into the men's locker room and had sex with her on the floor of the bathroom, authorities said.

Royal Caribbean security officers brought the abuse to the attention of law enforcement, the statement said.

Palmer's conduct occurred in the special maritime jurisdiction of the U.S. and faces up to 15 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for June.
