Police investigate 'drive-up' shooting in Southeast Baltimore

Man found in parked car

March 20, 2012|By Justin Fenton, The Baltimore Sun

A 37-year-old man was shot and killed in a quiet Southeast Baltimore neighborhood after a gunman drove up alongside his vehicle at an intersection and opened fire.

Police did not immediately identify the victim. The shooting occurred in the Bayview neighborhood near the Johns Hopkins hospital of the same name, in the 6400 block of E. Pratt St., where only one shooting has been reported since 2008.

Officers responding to a report of gunshots found the victim sitting in a Chevy Malibu, slumped over and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say a silver van pulled up alongside the victim's vehicle at an intersection and opened fire, then fled westbound on Pratt Street. Officials did not give a motive or a description of the suspects. Shootings are rare for the Bayview neighborhood, formerly known as Joseph Lee, which has seen only one in the past four years, according to data posted on the city's OpenBaltimore site.

In addition to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, the Southeast District police station is located there.

Police also identified a man fatally shot Friday night in the 3500 block of W. Belvedere; he was Fareed Caldwell, 25, of the 1200 block of Linkside Drive in Parkville. That case remains open as well.

Anyone with information on either case was asked to call detectives at 410-396-2100.
