Area players earn weekly awards

Players from Loyola, Navy, Salisbury and Washington cited by respective conferences

A number of players from area schools were honored Monday by their respective conferences.

Loyola junior attackman Mike Sawyer and sophomore goalkeeper Jack Runkel were named the Eastern College Athletic Conference’s Offensive and Defensive Players of the week.

Sawyer amassed 11 goals and three assists in back-to-back wins against Michigan and No. 14 Duke. Runkel made a career-high 12 saves in the No. 8 Greyhounds’ 13-8 victory over the Blue Devils Saturday.

Navy’s Pat Kiernan earned the Patriot League’s Defensive Player of the Week award. The sophomore long-stick midfielder scored two goals in the team’s 12-7 win against Lafayette Saturday and also added five groundballs and a career-best four caused turnovers.

Salisbury’s Matt Cannone was named the Capital Athletic Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week. The senior attackman accrued 12 goals and four assists in the No. 1 Sea Gulls’ 16-4 thumping of Ursinus and 18-7 rout of Ohio Wesleyan.

Washington’s Bennett Cord was cited by the Centennial Conference as the league’s Offensive Player of the Week. The junior attackman compiled seven goals and 11 assists in the Shoremen’s 13-5 victory over Elizabethtown and 20-1 thrashing of Wesley.
