Campaign finance: Three dollars here and there can add up to a bundle

March 05, 2012

In response to Lyle Rescott's letter about President Obama's goal of raising $1 billion for his re-election campaign and her joke that he wouldn't do it by asking everyone to give $3 each ("'Democrats' fundraising practices are rotten, too." Feb. 29):

There is already a box on the federal income tax form that allows the preparer to check off a $3 donation that goes to finance publicly funded election campaigns.

It happened to me and my husband and also to my son, who was not even old enough to vote at the time. It's a sneaky yet easy way to raise a $1 billion.
