No. 4 Poets trample Northwestern in 1A South

Defending Class 1A state champion and No. 4 Dunbar continued its march to the state finals at UMBC's RAC Arena on Wednesday.

Michelle Wright scored a game-high 17 points and the host Poets beat Northwestern, 57-27, in a Class 1A South regional semifinal.

The Poets (16-6) will face the winner of Ben Franklin-Masonville's game with Surrattsville in Saturday's regional final.

No. 14 Century 58, Walkersville 40: Alice Mercer scored 19 points and Jamie Clark added 16 to power the host Knights (22-3) past the Lions in Class 2A West.

Patterson Mill 63, Joppatowne 48: The Huskies (17-5) used a 12-0 run to start and were never threatened in Class 2A East.

The host Mariners, whose streak of five straight regional title game appearances ended, were hampered before the game started when senior Lakiah Huff turned an ankle and could not play.

Morgan Golec scored 26 points to lead Patterson Mill, while Qalea Ismail added 13 and Sam Herman had 10.

River Hill 50, Annapolis 40: Julia Collins scored 15 points to lead the host Hawks in Class 3A East. The Panthers' Latifah Butler also scored 15 points.

Howard 51, Reservoir 48, OT: Brittany Butler scored six of her team's nine overtime points to lift the host Lions (17-7) over the Gators (15-8) in Class 3A East.

Butler, who finished with a game-high 18 points, made two free throws with two seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 42 and force overtime. Howard faces host River Hill in Friday's regional final at 7 p.m.
