Course in ham radio

The Anne Arundel Radio Club will hold an entry-level amateur radio technician license course in five sessions from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays starting March 17 at the Davidsonville Recreation Center, 3727 Queen Anne Bridge Road. The course covers all modern aspects of ham radio. Morse code is no longer required. Theater auditions

The Colonial Players will hold auditions at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 4, and 7 p.m. Monday, March 5, for a June production of the comedy "Moonlight and Magnolias." The show runs June 8-30.

Youth fundraiser

An all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner to benefit those attending Youth Council retreats will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 2, at the Salvation Army, 351 Hilltop Lane in Annapolis. Cost is $7; $5 for children younger than 12 and $25 for a family of five. Information: 410-263-4091.

Study of old age

The Department of Aging and Disabilities is seeking seniors 80 and older who are mentally sharp and in good health as possible candidates for the National Institute on Aging's study into what determines a person's longevity.

All qualified participants will receive a complete physical examination, including tests of strength, stamina and mental sharpness. This will help the study directors to observe the aging process and to identify the secrets of aging well.

'Women in Industry'

The YWCA's annual "Tribute to Women in Industry" awards dinner, where companies honor executive and professional female employees who have made significant contributions to their workplace and community, will be held beginning at 5:30 p.m. June 6 at the Westin Annapolis, 100 Westgate Circle.

The event also recognizes local companies that promote professional growth and development for female employees.

All proceeds benefit the TWIN program and YWCA services supporting victims of domestic violence programs.

Advance ticket purchase is required for this event, which is open to the public. Individual tickets and sponsorship packages may be purchased at annapolisywca.org. Tickets are $85 per person, $65 for previous honorees.

Anthem auditions

The Bowie Baysox will host auditions Saturday, March 10, for those who would like to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at home games.

Prince George's Stadium gates open at 9 a..m. for registration, and auditions begin at 9:30 a.m. Every participant must register, and auditions are conducted on a first-come, first-served basis. Auditions will be held rain or shine, and reservations for audition times will not be accepted.

Triathlon set April 14

The sixth annual Emily Schindler Memorial Triathlon will be held April 14 in Severna Park.

The 800-yard swim, 91/2-mile bike ride and 3-mile run will be held at the SPY Aquatics Center, 623 Baltimore/Annapolis Blvd. and on the Baltimore/Annapolis Trail. Participants may also sign up for the "Flamingo Feat," with a 1,600-yard swim, 18-mile bike ride and 6-mile run.

Check-in begins at 6 a.m., and the first group of swimmers starts at 7 a.m. The fee is $50, $90 for a relay team of two, and $135 for a three-person relay team.

Rotary scholarships

The Rotary Club of Annapolis is accepting scholarship applications from seniors graduating from Annapolis high schools, including home-schooled students.

Up to four cash scholarship awards of $1,000 each are available to area students who plan to attend an accredited college or university and who have demonstrated a commitment to community service.

Relatives of Rotary members are ineligible. Deadline for applications is April 1.

Arts center gala

The Chesapeake Arts Center's annual gala will be held from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Four Points by Sheraton BWI Airport, 7032 Elm Road.

This year's theme, "Believe in Magic," is in honor of Harry Houdini's birthday. Music will be provided by the acoustic duo Rick and Regina. In addition, magician Spencer Horsman will perform a show to honor Houdini. The evening includes hors d' oeuvres, an open bar, dinner, dancing and a silent auction.
