It was good to read that the homeless count in Harford County has gone down, but has it really? Do we really know how many homeless are sleeping in their cars every night? Do we know how many homeless go uncounted because they are wandering from place to place so not to draw attention to themselves or because of embarrassment or fear? Let us not forget that homelessness is 24/7/365.
During the holiday season, many of us reached into our pockets and helped those less fortunate. However, throughout the year there are many ways that we can all help by donating food and clothing and money to these local shelters or organizations. And volunteering your time at a shelter is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself when you see how you can impact the life of someone, if only with a smile or kind word. You can also attend a local fundraising event that many of the organizations put on throughout the year that helps to fund their cause. There are many opportunities for us in Harford County to help those less fortunate. Please consider how you can help the homeless so next year's annual homeless count in Harford County is zero.
