Centrowitz wins Millrose's Wanamaker Mile in 3:53.92
Matthew Centrowitz (Broadneck) won the prestigious Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in New York, finishing in 3 minutes, 53.92 seconds. He was followed by Americans Miles Batty (3:54.54) and Garrett Heath (3:55.24). Centrowitz announced in November that he will forgo his senior year of eligibility at Oregon and turn professional in a bid to improve his chances of qualifying for this year's Olympics in London.
Minor league basketball: Hugh Jones scored 44 points as the visiting Beltway Bombers defeated the Bay Area Shuckers, 128-125, in the Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League. Adrian Bowie (Maryland) had 33 for the Shuckers.
MISL: The Missouri Comets (12-8) beat the Blast, 18-9, Friday night to hand Baltimore (14-6) its second straight loss, both on the road. Ricardinho led the Major Indoor Soccer League Eastern- Division-leading Blast with two goals.
College football: Linebacker Brye French and slot back Bo Snelson were elected captains by their Navy teammates. French played in all 12 games last fall, starting nine at outside linebacker. He finished sixth on the team with 55 tackles, six of which were behind the line of scrimmage. Snelson, known for his blocking, has rushed for 191 yards and a touchdown during his three-year career while catching four passes for 52 yards.
College wrestling: A victory against visiting Duke today would give Maryland (13-1, 3-1) a share of the regular-season Atlantic Coast Conference championship for the second time in three seasons. Five Terps are ranked in InterMat's Top 20, led by No. 2 Josh Asper (165 pounds); the Hereford alumnus, a junior, is 22-0 with a team-high five technical-fall victories.
