Education notes: Pine Grove students get double dose of performances

January 31, 2012

Students at Pine Grove Elementary School on Dulaney Valley Road were set to be doubly entertained this week with educational performances on and off campus.

On Wednesday, Feb. 1, second-grade students at Pine Grove Elementary School were scheduled to attend a live performance of "Henry and Mudge" at Goucher College, presented by TheatreWorks USA.

The production supplements classwork; the students have been reading about the adventures of Henry and his canine buddy Mudge in recent weeks.

Then, on Friday, Feb. 3, author and songwriter Barry Louis Polisar will visit Pine Grove for performances for students in grades two and three. Polisar has written songs for Sesame Street and The Weekly Reader, and he has been a musical performer on The Learning Channel and at the White House.

Notre Dame Prep hosts annual 'Pasta for the Philippines'

Notre Dame Preparatory School, 815 Hampton Lane, Towson, will host its Pasta for the Philippines on Thursday, Feb. 2, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is part of the school's Catholic Schools Week celebration.

For the past 20 years, the Notre Dame Prep has held a spaghetti luncheon to benefit needy children in the Philippines. Since begun in 1992, Pasta for the Philippines has raised more than $39,000 for a student lunch program at the St. Louis School in Tuguegarao (Northern Luzon), Philippines. All told, the money has funded more than 350,000 lunches at the Saint Louis School.

Officials said that over the years, the NDP community has consumed 9,500 pasta lunches, which breaks down to 2,000 pounds of pasta; 720 gallons of sauce and 4,000 baguettes.
