January 30, 2012

Laurel City Council member Michael Leszcz was elected chair of the Patuxent River Commission Jan. 11, and Howard County Council Chair Mary Kay Sigaty was elected as the PRC vice chair.

Leszcz was first appointed to the PRC in 2005 by Gov. Robert Ehrlich; he was reappointed in 2007 by Gov.Martin O'Malley. He represent Laurel and other municipalities that are adjacent to the Patuxent River Watershed.

The PRC is a 34-member, interjurisdictional group created by the General Assembly in 1980 to address Patuxent River watershed issues. Its membership represents a cross-section of the watershed's interest groups and serves as an inter-jurisdictional forum for the protection and restoration of the Patuxent River's economic, recreational and environmental resources.

In a statement, Leszcz said he "looks forward with excitement and optimism to serving the citizens of Maryland in the very important area of protecting the Patuxent River watershed."
