It's that time of year again for Harford County Tax-Aide. Reservations are being take for the program's free state and federal tax preparation services for low and moderate income county residents. Actual preparation of returns begins Wednesday, Feb. 1.

Volunteers for the Harford County Tax-Aide Program recently completed a two-week training program on preparing federal and Maryland state tax forms for the 2011 tax year.

Those who successfully completed the training are certified by the IRS and the state of Maryland to prepare tax returns free for middle and low income taxpayers, with special attention given to those ages 60 and older.

This popular community service program is administered by the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the IRS. It is staffed entirely by volunteers. Clients do not have to be AARP members.

Locally, the AARP Tax-Aide Program is supported by the Harford County Office on Aging. Tax preparation and electronic filing services are provided on various days at locations in Aberdeen, Bel Air, Edgewood, Havre de Grace, and Whiteford. Tax preparations can also be arranged for shut-ins and other people who cannot travel to one of the established sites.

Taxes will be prepared by appointment for personal returns only. This program will not prepare tax returns involving farms, businesses, rental properties or partnerships.

Appointments may be scheduled by calling 410-638-3425. The appointment office is open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday to schedule appointments.

Because of the initial volume of calls when the lines first open, callers may experience difficulty getting through. If you can't get through at first, please be patient and persistent in calling back.

This year the program will have its fifth annual AMD Tax Day on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1515 Emmorton Road (Route 924) in Bel Air.

On this day only, no prior appointment will be required and tax returns will be prepared on a first come, first served basis. Clients are asked to please bring their 2010 tax return as well as Social Security cards for all persons claimed as dependents and at least one other form of identification.
