Parent workshops

The public school system's Office of Early Childhood Programs and the Transition to Kindergarten Workgroup will host a series of workshops for parents with children who will be 5 by Sept. 1 and will enter kindergarten in the fall. No registration is required; sessions are free and child care for children two and older will be provided at some locations.

•Wednesday, Feb. 1, 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at Marriotts Ridge High School, 12100 Route 99, Marriottsville.

•Monday, Feb. 6, 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at Hammond Middle School, 8110 Aladdin Drive, Laurel (child care available).

Film series

Tickets are available for the Columbia Jewish Congregation's annual film series, continuing Saturday, Feb. 11, with "The Infidel." All screenings take place at the Columbia Jewish Congregation, 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Room 200. Tickets are $30 for the remaining three films are $24 for three, or $17 for two showings. Tax assistance site

The county's first Volunteer Income Tax Assistance office has opened at the North Laurel Community Center, 9411 Whiskey Bottom Road, and will remain in operation throughout the tax season. The site offers free tax assistance preparation and free electronic filing to most taxpayers who earned up to $49,000 last year. Hours are 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays. For appointments and more information, call 410-313-0386 or go to This year's tax-filing deadline is April 17.

Auditions for seniors

The Howard County Office on Aging seeks senior singers to represent the county in the Maryland State Senior Idol Competition taking place on April 4. Auditions will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way in Columbia and Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road. The Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House is accepting applications for artists to exhibit in the galleries for the 2013 season. Practice SAT

Registration is under way for a practice SAT being held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Vantage House, 5400 Vantage Point Road in Columbia. The American Association of University Women is sponsoring this event to promote higher education for middle- and high school students; the cost is $15 for the practice SAT and a follow-up strategy session from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 3. Princeton Review will conduct the sessions, with all proceeds going to the association's philanthropic funds. Refreshments will be served. Registration required.
