Baltimore police said someone crashed a vehicle into the historic Phoenix Shot Tower near Little Italy Sunday afternoon just before 2 p.m.
No injuries were reported, and no further information was immediately available.
In a separate incident Sunday night, a car flipped over around 9:20 at East Baltimore and President streets, a block south of the Shot Tower. Fire officials say two people were extricated and taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital. No further information was immediately available.
The Shot Tower, at the intersection of Fayette and President streets, was the tallest building in the United States when it was built in 1828, according to Carroll Museums Inc., which oversees the property. It stands 215 feet high and is made up of more than 1 million bricks. It was used to make "drop shot" ammunition for various weaponry through 1892. Molten lead was dropped from the top of the tower, separated through colanders and collected in a vat of water below, made into round, smooth orbs from the spin through the air. Today, the tower is a public museum.
