Police say shots were fired in road-rage altercation

A 34-year-old Joppa man was charged Wednesday with first-degree assault and reckless endangerment after allegedly firing shots at another vehicle while driving north on Interstate 95 near the exit for Route 152.

No one was injured in the incident, state troopers said.

The suspect, Nicholas Heider, could face additional charges from the Harford County State's Attorney's Office, according to troopers.

The other driver involved said the dispute started over a disagreement over right-of-way between the drivers near Exit 67. The two men gestured at each other and cut each other off, troopers said.

Troopers found no evidence that the victim's vehicle had been stuck by gunfire.

Heider, of the 1600 block of Dugan Drive, was expected to appear late Wednesday in the Harford County Detention Center before a court commissioner.

The victim called 911 shortly before 4 p.m. to report that another driver had fired possibly three shots in the direction of his vehicle.

Police used a tag number the second driver provided to learn Heider's address, where they found his GMC sport utility vehicle in the driveway. Heider surrendered to troopers and deputies on the scene without incident around 4:30 p.m., a duty officer at the Bel Air Barrack troopers said.

Police searched the home and found a semi-automatic handgun. The investigation is continuing.
