Wednesday's menu: Is this the loneliest New Hampshire cafe on the candidates' trail?

  • Everyone down in Canton knows about the Wednesday entree special at Geckos, the folks down in Riverside and Locust Point turn out for the crab cake special at Captain Larry's and the gang up in White Marsh heads over to Red Brick Station for the $19.99 steak special. Here is a roundup of Wednesday dining specials.

In Wednesday's news, those poor candidates can stop eating all of that bad fried Iowa food.

It's on to New Hampshire, where, in Manchester, there's a cafe/wine bar named Republic that publishes a manifesto on its website. It's hard to tell Repubic is kidding, or if it ever is. ("Republic accepts only legal currency, but bartering is encouraged. What have you got?"). It looks like the last place in the Granite State you'd expect to see any campaigning this year.

Time's Josh Ezersky on the case for eating horse meat. You might as well, he says, feed the hungry with it.

An Eastern Shore Crab Cake recipe from Serious Eats. The golden rule for making crab cakes, the post says, is to use only enough extraneous ingredients to hold the cake together. Wrong. The golden rule is to use Maryland crab meat.

If you want to become your group's designated whiskey expert in about 15 minutes, check out this Single Malt Whiskey Flavour Map on malts.com (a good find by Food Republic). But first, on the website's gateway page, you'll have to think to enter your date of birth in the backward European way -- date month year. Revolting. Almost as bad as pulldown address menus where they put the United States of America alphabetically instead of up top.

Or you could learn everything you need to know about whiskey at Birds of a Feather in Fells Point.

Jack's Bistro is on vacation. The Canton restaurant will open on Thursday, Jan. 12

The Waterfront Kitchen is closed for kitchen renovations through this Thursday.

Specials of the week:

Petit Louis is having a cellar raid. Dine there and get 50 percent off bottles of wine. That's through Thursday.

Also through Thursday, The Wine Market in Locust Point is offering 50 percent of wine by the glass.
