Gunman tries to rob Wendy's but leaves empty-handed

Man demanded money from safe but left when worker at Laurel restaurant said it could not be opened

A man with a gun tried to rob a Wendy's restaurant in Laurel Saturday night but left when an employee told him the safe could not be opened, according to Anne Arundel County police.

Police said the incident occurred about 10:20 at the restaurant in the 3500 block of Russett Green East, which in a sprawling housing development near Route 198 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

Police said Sunday that the man did wanted money from the safe and did not take any from the cash drawers. A search by officers and a police canine unit did not locate a suspect.
