Blast rallies for tough 9-4 win in Milwaukee

Ferdinand, Healey shoot past the Wave's early lead

December 31, 2011|From Sun staff reports

In the most anticipated game of the first half of the Major Indoor Soccer League season, the Blast beat the host Milwaukee Wave, 9-4, on Saturday in a low-scoring but hard-fought affair featuring a combined six goals and 11 penalty minutes.

Max Ferdinand and Pat Healey led the Blast (8-3) to their seventh win on the road in the game — a rematch of the 2011 MISL championship — which featured the top two teams in the league and was another hard-fought battle in the rivalry.

With the Wave leading 4-0 late in the first quarter, Ferdinand scored to make it 4-2 and then provided an assist to rookie J.T. Noone in the second quarter to tie the game at 4-4. Stephen DeRoux scored Blast's third straight goal to put it on top for the first time, and Pat Healey scored a late three-pointer against the Wave's sixth-attacker offense to clinch the 9-4 victory.

Giuliano Oliviero and Nick Perera scored the first two goals of the game to give the Wave the early 4-2 lead.

Goalkeeper Sagu earned the victory to improve to 7-3 on the season. Noone now has seven goals on the season.

The win was forward Matt Watson's last Blast game — the team will release Watson today in order to allow him to sign with Vancouver Whitecaps FC of Major League Soccer.

The Blast will return to 1st Mariner Arena next weekend to host Syracuse on Friday and Rochester on Saturday, when former Blast players Dan Counce and Rusty Troy will be inducted into the club's Hall of Fame.
