L. Mitchell to attend tribute to former Colts
The Babe Ruth Birthplace Foundation announced Wednesday that former Baltimore Colts running back Lydell Mitchell and NFL senior adviser Joe Browne will be part of "A Legendary Evening: Celebrating our Baltimore Colts Hall of Famers" on Dec.6 at Martin's West. The evening will pay tribute to former Colts Art Donovan, Lenny Moore, Gino Marchetti, Raymond Berry, Weeb Ewbank, John Mackey and Jim Parker as they are inducted into the Hall of Legends, an area at Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards reserved for the elite of Maryland's sports culture. Among the additional special guests who will take part in the evening include former Maryland men's basketball coach Gary Williams and other former Colts, such as Jim Mutscheller and Jim O'Brien. Williams was inducted into the Hall of Legends in 2010. Individual tickets for "A Legendary Evening" are $150 and include a cocktail reception with an open, premium bar from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., silent auction, seated dinner and program; reserved tables of 10 are available for $1,500. 2 UMBC games to be aired nationally in historic firsts
The UMBC women's basketball team's Jan. 25 Midday Madness game against Boston University will air on ESPN3, making it the first-ever America East women's game to be broadcast nationally. In addition, the Retrievers will play defending league champion Hartford on Feb. 19 on CBS Sports in the first nationally televised women's game in conference history.
More women: Katie McGahagan and Anna Hackett each scored 14 points as visiting Salisbury (2-2, 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference) earned a 57-48 victory Wednesday over Hood (0-5, 0-1). Dyanna Prater posted a game-high 21 points on 9-for-15 shooting for Hood (0-5, 0-1), which never led in the game. … Katie Wimmer scored a game-high 18 points for Mary Washington (5-0, 1-0 CAC) which won, 64-36, over host Stevenson (4-3, 0-1). … Imani Stokes led all scorers with 27 points, but visiting Notre Dame (Maryland) fell, 89-51, to Cabrini (3-2, 2-0 Colonial States Athletic Conference). The Gators fell to 0-3, 0-2. … Towson senior guard Krystal Parnell was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week. She shared the honor with Taleia Moton of George Mason. … Loyola signed five players to national letters of intent: Brittany Butler (Howard), Diana Logan, Tiffany Padgett (St. Vincent Pallotti), Jeneh Perry and Bryanna Robinson.
Men: Alex Zurn's 25-foot shot as time expired missed the mark, and host Johns Hopkins (4-1, 2-0 Centennial Conference) held on for a 52-49 win over Gettyburg (3-3, 1-1). … Cullen Murray-Kemp led visiting McDaniel (3-3, 1-1 Centennial) with 15 points, but Dickinson (4-2, 2-0) prevailed, 66-58. … Troy Dockett had a game-high 25 points and Maurice Williams added 22 to power visiting Frostburg State (2-3, 1-0 CAC) to an 81-73 win over Marymount (2-4, 1-0). … Cameron Cook had 19 points, and host Hood (4-1, 1-0 CAC) handed Salisbury (4-1, 0-1) its first loss, 67-55. … Five Fords scored in double digits as host Haverford (2-4, 1-1 Centennial) won, 88-76, over Washington College (2-3, 0-2). … Tad Dickman scored 19 points as visiting Mary Washington (5-1, 1-0 CAC) won, 63-53, over Stevenson (2-4, 0-1).

Russell, Pimentel tied atop Laurel Park fall standings
With 14 live racing days remaining in the fall meeting at Laurel Park, Sheldon Russell, who won the Laurel winter and Pimlico Race Course spring titles, and Julian Pimentel are tied atop the standings with 43 winners. Horacio Karamanos is one back. Dane Kobiskie has a 27-23 lead over Jamie Ness in the trainer standings. The former rider has won 27 races from 78 starters. Ness has been nearly as impressive with 23 victories from 77 starters. Russell and Kobiskie have all but wrapped up year-round honors at the major Maryland tracks. Russell has 114 first-place finishes, 21 more than Pimentel, while Kobiskie has saddled 56 winners, 23 ahead of Dale Capuano and Chris Grove.
UMBC: The largest class in the history of the UMBC Athletic Hall of Fame will be inducted Feb.4. The honorees are athletic director Charles Brown; Jen Dragoni, women's lacrosse, 2000-2004; Brad Green, swimming and diving, 2000-2004; Adam Grossman, track and field, 2002-2006; Ted Lawler, men's soccer, 1994-1998; Brendan Mundorf, men's lacrosse, 2002-2006; Josef Novotny, men's tennis, 2001-2004; Keith Puryear, tennis coach, 1990-2008; and Drew Westervelt, men's lacrosse, 2003-2007.
Women's college lacrosse: UMBC will open the 2012 season at home Feb. 19 against Florida, which reached the NCAA quarterfinals last season as the No. 4 seed. Other highlights are visits to crosstown foes Towson (Feb. 29), Loyola (March 10) and Johns Hopkins (April 25).
Navy track and field: The Midshipmen announced that their 2011-12 men's team captains will be Dominic Della Pelle (indoor) and Christopher Ricks (outdoor). The women's captains will be Mansfield Murph (indoor) and Amanda Phelps (outdoor).
Women's college soccer: Three Johns Hopkins women's players were named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America team. Seniors Erica Suter (River Hill) and Pam Kopfensteiner each earned first-team accolades, while senior Kristen Redsun was named to the second team.
Men's college soccer: Johns Hopkins senior Sean Coleman was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-American team first team, and senior Drew Holland earned second-team honors.
Redskins: Cornerback DeAngelo Hall earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in Washington's 23-17 win against the Seahawks on Sunday. Hall recorded five tackles, six pass breakups and an interception.
