Havre de Grace Main Street First Friday's

November 30, 2011

The shop windows in Havre de Grace are decked out for the holiday season, just in time for the city's Light Up Night tonight, Dec. 2.

"Light Up Night" kicks off the holiday season today (Friday) at 6 p.m. with Santa arriving in style, cruising on a Susquehanna Hose Company truck up St. John Street to Washington Street. It is one of several events planned in the greater Havre de Grace area over the coming weeks.

Experience the Winter Wonderland sponsored by the Havre de Grace Chamber of Commerce with lights throughout downtown and the lighting of the City's Christmas tree donated by the Havre de Grace Masons, Susquehanna Lodge 130. Enjoy the talents of the Havre de Grace High School Warrior Marching Band and the Havre de Grace Middle School Band. Experience the start of the holiday season by telling Santa your Christmas wishes at the new Santa Land on Washington Street.

During this holiday season, some of the shops of Havre de Grace have extended hours in an effort to push Shop and Dine Local initiative. In addition, Santa and Mrs. Claus will return to St. John Street at his workshop Dec. 3, 10 and 17 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. to tap into every child's imagination.

Throughout December, choose from a flurry of exciting events to boost your Christmas spirit in the Havre de Grace area. The Steppingstone Museum will hold its annual Christmas Open House Dec. 3 and 4 from noon to 4 p.m. The farmhouse will be decorated in true Christmas style with parlor music, apple cider, and cookies.

The 39th annual Candlelight Tour by the Susquehanna Lock House Museum on Sunday, Dec. 11, allows you to explore historic Havre de Grace and architecturally interesting homes, churches and museums. Tickets are on sale at the Havre de Grace Visitor Center on Pennington Avenue. Home tours begin at 4 p.m. and continue until 8 p.m. The Lock House Ladies Boutique is opened Saturday, Dec. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and during the tour Sunday, Dec. 11 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Susquehanna Lock House Museum in McLhinney Park. Tour Tickets are $15, all to benefit the Susquehanna Lock House Museum.

A Nautical Christmas will be had at the Maritime Museum, Dec. 11 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Havre de Grace Church Tour is another of the local traditions. The self guided tour of the Churches is free and open to all on Dec. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m.

How better to ring in the New Year than with the Havre de Grace Fireworks display Dec. 31. Finish your New Year's Eve evening celebrating the end of 2011 with a fireworks display at the Havre de Grace Middle School, courtesy of the Susquehanna Hose Company. This year's event, like those of the past, features a lighted duck being dropped from the evening sky.
