Ice hockey

The Gardens Ice House, in Laurel, is offering a free ice hockey clinic on Dec. 5 for girls ages 18 and under. Call 301-953-0100, Ext. 102 or 113.


The Rudolph 5k Run or Two-Person Relay will be held Dec. 3 at Rockburn Branch Park. Run the whole 5k or team up with a friend and do a two-person relay (each teammate runs 2.5k, which is just over 1.5 miles). Team registration is being accepted for the Lax Blast Shoot-Out Indoor tournament scheduled for Dec. 30 in Hampstead. The tournament is an open level event for school, recreation and club teams in the Baltimore metropolitan area. The U.S. women's national senior team will be conducting a youth instructional clinic Dec. 3 for girls in grades 3-12 at Champions Fieldhouse, in Rockville. The clinic will be offered to all current US Lacrosse members for $55, from 9-11:30 a.m. (grades 3-8) and 12:30-3 p.m. (grades 9-12). These unique educational sessions will be led by the 2011-2012 U.S. women's national team. Goalie-specific instruction will also be provided. Register at


The regular meeting of Talkin' Baseball will be held Dec. 10 at 9 a.m. at Brighton Gardens, 7110 Minstrel Way, in Columbia. Bob Luke will discuss his book, "The Most Famous Woman in Baseball: FFA Manly and the Negro Leagues." Everyone is welcome.


The Columbia Gym, in Clarksville, is hosting youth indoor soccer, Jan. 21-March 11. Games are played on Saturdays (noon-8 p.m.) and Sundays (1-7 p.m.). Register by Jan. 16. Thunder Soccer Club is looking for a few key players to add to its very successful U-11 boys soccer program. This age group currently has three teams that compete in the NCSL, CMSSL and BBSL. Tryouts will be held Jan. 8, at 1 p.m. in the Howard Community College gym. RSVP to 443-545-4034.

Field hockey

Team registration is underway for the Indoor Field Hockey Extravaganza scheduled for Jan. 16 at the Garrison Forest School, in Owings Mills. Competition is available for U-16 (JV), U-18 (varsity), U-12 (5th & 6th grades) and U-14 (7th & 8th grades). The tournament features round-robin competition.
