Know retailers' return policies to avoid Black Friday regrets

November 22, 2011|Eileen Ambrose

Today I wrote about how consumers can keep themselves from overspending on Black Friday and the rest of the holiday season.

But it’s a good idea to check the return policy, just in case that Chia pet doesn’t work out.

FreeShipping.org has put together a list of return policies for top e-retailers. Here are a few of them:

Walmart will take items back within 90 days of purchase and a receipt. Exceptions may be made on certain items.

Costco is generous. You have 365 days — that’s until the next Black Friday — to return items. And it will reimburse your shipping and handling charges if you buy online.

Kmart is stricter. You have 90 days after the purchase to return the item along with original receipt or email confirmation.

Macy’s gives you 180 days to return items — except on jewelry that must be returned within 30 days. policy. No receipt is necessary. Macy’s systems has that info already.

You also can save some money by checking out FreeShipping, which posts retailers' codes for, what else, free shipping.
