Sometimes a bar has been around so long that it's easy to take for granted. So it is with Slainte Irish Pub. For eight years, the bar has been an anchor in Fells Point, a clean-cut destination for traditional Irish fare and sports.
If you're a soccer fan, there's no better place in town to watch a match than at Slainte. When the site of the World Cup 2022 was announced, fans gathered at Slainte to commiserate over the United States' loss and to get excited about the championship.
But Slainte is an all-around sports bar. It also carries rugby matches and the NHL. And, of course, the Ravens.
Drinks: The bar features a fairly typical beer list as well as experienced bartenders. On a recent Monday, Slainte's best bartenders had an Irish whiskey mix-off for a chance to have their cocktails featured on the bar's fall drinks menu. In terms of beer, Slainte offers Amstel Light, Carlsberg, Newcastle and Heineken, among others. On Sundays, Amstel Light, Newcastle and Heineken drafts are $3; Heineken bottles are also $3. Irish coffee is $5.
Food: Slainte has an extensive menu that its owners are highly proud of. "We do not offer the typical 'football grub,'" said co-owner Patrick Russell. It features grilled salmon and a Maryland crab cake platter. Slainte's onion soup and gumbo have won awards from local media. And on Sundays, the menu is typically smart: croque Slainte and deviled eggs with gherkins and Irish rashers. Those items, along with barbecue pork sliders and mini buffalo wraps, are all $7 on the bar's fixed-price Sunday menu. The bar also has $10 corned beef and cabbage with buttered potatoes.
Decor: Like any good Irish pub, the decor at Slainte is low-key and homey. But the bar is also prepared to accommodate sports fans, with 12 high-definition flat-screen TVs, all featuring the NFL Sunday ticket.
Distance from stadium: The bar is 15 minutes from M&T Bank Stadium by car; a little over a half-hour by public transportation.
Parking: Street metered parking.
