3 Towson freshmen earn CAA weekly football honors

A trio of freshmen from the No. 10 Towson football team — tailback Terrance West (Northwestern), kick return specialist Derrick Joseph and cornerback Tye Smith — have been named as winners of Colonial Athletic Association weekly awards, conference officials announced Monday. West was named the Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, while Joseph was honored as the Special Teams Performer of the Week and Smith was the Rookie of the Week.

More college football: Maryland's Nov. 26 game at North Carolina State will begin at 12:30 p.m. and be televised on WJZ Channel 13. … Navy defensive end Jabaree Tuani was named the Co-Defensive Player of the Week among independent schools in the Football Bowl Subdivision. … Salisbury (9-1, 7-0 Empire 8) is ranked No. 10 in the Top 25 poll for the second straight week.

Men's college soccer: Maryland was awarded the fifth overall seed Monday in the NCAA championships. At 5 p.m. Sunday, the Terps (13-3-3) will host the winner of Thursday's first-round match between Xavier (12-4-4) and West Virginia (12-7-1). Maryland picked up its 11th straight NCAA postseason appearance and looks to advance to the third round for the 10th straight season. The Terps have landed in the College Cup five times since 2002, including national titles in 2005 and 2008. The postseason berth is Maryland's 31st as a program.

Men's college lacrosse: Tickets go on sale today for the 2012 Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic (March 10 at M&T Bank Stadium) and Konica Minolta Big City Classic (April 1 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.). Prices for the 2012 Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic are: $35 for club-level seats; $22 for lower-level reserved seats; $18 for groups of 10 or more; and $12 for groups of 100 or more. Women's college basketball: Sophomore Alyssa Thomas of the 10th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Player of the Week. … Thomas finished the week averaging 19.5 points and 11 rebounds. Her efforts helped lead the Terps (2-0) to wins over Loyola and No. 11 Georgetown. … UMBC freshman point guard Lauren Chase of Bowie was named America East Rookie of the Week for the first week of the season.

Capitals: According to a league source, defenseman Mike Green strained his right groin muscle in Friday's game against the New Jersey Devils. The injury is preventing Green from making a three-game road trip with the Capitals, who play Nashville tonight. Also, defenseman Roman Hamrlik said he will be ready to face the Predators. The veteran didn't finish Saturday's game against the Devils after suffering what he termed an upper-body injury in the second period.

Lingerie Football League: The No. 7 Baltimore Charm (2-1) will host its home finale against the No. 2 Philadelphia Passion (2-0) on Friday at 1st Mariner Arena. Kickoff is 9 p.m.

Women's college cross country: Johns Hopkins' Bobby Van Allen was named the Centennial Conference Coach of the Year, and Blue Jays sophomore Holly Clarke made the All-Centennial first team.

Cheerleading: The Maryland Marlins will hold tryouts Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon and Monday and Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The club is adding a third Senior 5 team and has openings on other teams. Contact, or 410-796-2244 for questions.
