A man died Tuesday morning in a single-car accident that snarled traffic for more than an hour on the outer loop of the Baltimore Beltway near I-795 in Baltimore County, police said.

North Baltimore resident Lemuel E. Johnson, 56, of the 1000 block of Reverdy Road was the only person in the car, and no one else was injured in the incident, police said.

According to Maryland State Police Cpl. Tom Heath, officers received a report at 6:06 a.m. about a car that had left the ramp leading from the beltway to northbound I-795.

Heath said they found that a four-door Toyota had gone "through or over" a guardrail, down an embankment, overturned and hit a tree, and that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are investigating the cause of the accident, Heath said.
