Roundup: Boys' Latin beats Curley to reach B Conf. football final

November 12, 2011|From Sun Staff Reports

Boys’ Latin gave Archbishop Curley a dose of Brandon Cherry that the top-seeded Friars (7-4) could not handle in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference football semifinal Saturday in Northeast Baltimore.

Behind their senior running back and a hard-hitting defense, the Lakers (5-6) took down the Friars, 21-14, and will advance to the conference title game against Annapolis Area Christian School on Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m. at Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Cherry was a one-man wrecking crew on offense for the fourth-seeded Lakers, carrying the ball 40 times for 285 yards and two touchdowns.

Class 1A South Region semifinals: Jaquan Holt had 10 rushes for 73 yards and a touchdown, and Charles Brown had two rushing touchdowns and 12 tackles on defense to power No. 7 Dunbar past Southside, 50-6.

Dunbar faces Surrattsville in Saturday’s regional final at Poly at 1 p.m.

Class 3A state semifinal:  Ariel Rodriguez scored with 22 seconds remaining to lift Watkins Mills of Montgomery County to a 1-0 victory over Hereford at CCBC-Essex on Saturday.

Goalie Cameron Thacker got a piece of Patrick Pato's shot on a free kick, but Thacker was knocked down on the play by a Watkins Mill player.

That allowed Rodriguez to have an easy tap in. Thacker finished with 11 saves.

Class 2A state semifinal: Fallston advanced to the 2A final with a 3-2 overtime victory over Patuxent (Calvert) on Saturday.

The Cougars fell behind 2-0 early in the second half, but rallied with two goals in the final 17 minutes to tie it and then win it in OT.

Tyler Andrus, who headed in the game-winner just 2:08 into the overtime, scored the Cougars’ first goal unassisted with 16:58 left to play. Sophomore defender Aidan O’Donnell tied the game seven minutes later with a left-foot blast from the top of the box.

Dale Echoles and Scott Maratta had given the Panthers a 2-0 lead with goals in each half. Echoles scored from 35 yards out off the cross bar and Maratta hit a low shot inside the right post with assist from Jacob Hayden.

The Cougars (13-5-1) outshot Patuxent (7-9) 29-6. Fallston goalie Robbie Kansler finished with four saves.

Class 3A state semifinal: Mount Hebron chalked up its third straight shutout and beat Chopticon, 4-0, at CCBC-Essex.

Class 2A East Region final: Fallston won the region Saturday with astraight-sets victory over visiting North Caroline. The scores were 25-16, 25-13 and 25-18.

Fallston will continue its defense of last year’s 2A state title, facing Calvert in a state semifinal Wednesday night at the University of Maryland’s Ritchie Coliseum. Match time is 6 p.m.

Leading the Cougars attack was senior captain Rachael Holehouse with 14 kills and five aces. Fellow senior captain Abby Claborn had 15 assists, and sophomore Anna Holehouse added 20 digs.
