A man and woman died in a house fire Saturday afternoon in Southwest Baltimore, fire officials said.

The pair appeared to have died from smoke inhalation and burns from the fire in the 400 block of S. Fulton Ave., said Chief Kevin Cartwright, Baltimore Fire Department spokesman. An official cause of death will have to be determined by the state medical examiner, he said.

The victims' names have not been released.

The fire was reported at 3:39 p.m., department spokesman Chief Roman Clark said.

The pair were dead on the third floor of the home by the time firefighters reached them, he said. The fire was entirely extinguished within an hour.

Firefighters arrived at the scene about 21/2 minutes after the call was placed, Clark said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
