Orioles hire Duquette to replace MacPhail as team's top executive

Former Boston Red Sox general manager has been out of major leagues since 2002

"They had to make some tough decisions and they had to really build from player development and scouting, and there's a whole bunch of trust with their fan base and [the fans] didn't buy into it until this year," Jim Duquette said. "There's a lot of reasons in this sport why it goes in that direction and it takes a while in this sport to get it going in that direction. I think Andy got it started there and … it'll be the next challenge. But it can be done."

There has also been speculation that the Orioles would not hire a strong personality that could conflict with Showalter. Dan Duquette has been known for being a confident, if sometimes abrasive, executive.

"I don't have any concern about he and Buck working together," Jim Duquette said. "Sometimes that [ego] gets mistaken for having conviction, but you can't work successfully in any of these big jobs without being able to work with the general manager or the manager. Even though they know each other a long time, their relationship takes time to build and grow. I think they're both in it for the right reasons. They've had some time away, they appreciate the game. To me, I think it's a terrific marriage. I think they're both bright baseball minds."
