No. 15 Bryn Mawr beats No. 13 Severn for IAAM B Conference soccer title

November 06, 2011|By Glenn Graham, The Baltimore Sun

B Conference: No. 15 Bryn Mawr 2, No. 13 Severn 1: All-Metro senior midfielder Riley Barger capped a fine four-year career with the game-winning goal and an assist in the first half and Bryn Mawr (14-5) was able to withstand a strong second-half push from Severn to capture its third straight B Conference crown.

Barger made a dazzling run with the ball down the left side before sending a cross to the middle for junior forward Ellie DeGarmo, who finished off a chance from six yards for a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into play.

With 6:42 to play in the half, Barger found time and space in the middle to unleash a left-footed shot from 25 yards that neatly found the lower right corner for a 2-0 halftime advantage.

The Admirals (15-5) controlled much of the second half, cutting the lead to 2-1 with 22:25 to play when senior forward Abbey Ritter scored off of Delia Repasky's free kick that struck the crossbar. Despite continued pressure that created a couple more scoring chances for Severn, the Mawrtians held their ground on defense to secure the title.

"We definitely came prepared. Coming back for a second championship is definitely [tough], but coming for a third is even harder. We made it a goal in the beginning of our season to win, so we definitely wanted to come out as hard as we could to accomplish that goal," Barger said. "Severn is a team that never gives up. We knew that and we tried our best to not let them score. We had a little breakdown on a free kick, but we definitely came back strong after that and held our composure and did the best we could."

Bryn Mawr finished with a 9-0 regular-season mark in league play before adding three more playoff wins on its way to the program's third straight title.
