In a driving snowstorm, the Howard Community College cross country men's and women's teams captured titles at the Region XX/Maryland JUCO Championships.

Mary Rzegocki led the women with a second place finish in a time of 22 minutes, 8 seconds. She was followed by Leslie Dickens (sixth in 24:14), Madison Hoover (10th in 26:32), Destiny Jones (14th in 28:34) and Reenae Winfree (18th in 29:22).

This was the third regional title for the women and their first Maryland JUCO title. Rzegocki and Dickens were both named to the All-Region and All-JUCO teams.

Filagot Dinku led the men, as he came in fourth with a time of 29:24 for the 8k race. He was followed by Andrew Parlette (eighth in 29:56), Rafi Fernandez (12th in 31:02), Ken Clarkson (15th in 31:43), Brandon Woodley (20th in 34:09), Edwin Walker (21st in 34:10), Kyle Gorinson (36th in 40:03) and Anthony Petropoulakis (40th in 43:42).

The men won the D-III region title and were second in the Maryland JUCO. Dinku, Parlette and Fernandez made the All-Region team, while Dinku was named to the All-JUCO team as well.

"It was certainly interesting," Head Coach Steve Musselman said. "The three inches of snow and the wind made for some rough conditions. They ran a very tough race and accomplished our team goals."

The team will travel to Springfield, Massachusetts Nov. 3-5 to compete in the NJCAA Division III National Meet.

Coach Musselman was named Region XX/D-III Coach of the Year for men and women, in addition to MD JUCO women's coach of the year.
