Rallo's returns as Big Matty's Diner, with some old faces

October 31, 2011|By Richard Gorelick | The Baltimore Sun

Rallo's, the Locust Point gateway restaurant that closed in late September following the death of its owner, Vincent Rallo, is back open under new ownership and with a new name.

Big Matty's Diner is open for business. Watch for more details later today.

Big Matty's Diner is located at 838 E. Fort Ave. in Riverside. The phone number is 410-727-7067, the same as when it was Rallo's

UPDATE, Oct. 31, 2:15 p.m.: The owner of Big Matty's Diner is Matt Gurczynski, a longtime customer of Rallo's. Gurczynski decided to purchase and reopen Rallo's after speaking with its staff, most of whom, he said, have agreed to stay on. Gurczynski, a builder by trade, has done some general cleaning of the old place, but it still looks, he said, like the neighborhood diner it's meant to be.

For now, Big Matty's Diner is open for breakfast and lunch only, but Gurczynski says he hopes to add in dinner hours within a few weeks. Eventually, the new owner wants to have Big Matty's Diner open 24 hours, at least on weekends.
