We all have a responsibility to drive safely

October 27, 2011

Thank you for your recent article about the problems involved in making our roads safe ("Road of mourning," Oct. 23). I was amazed that in this era of disdain for government regulation there was not a single mention of citizens' personal responsibility to abide by the rules of the road.

The speed limit on Route 177 is 40 mph. There needs to be a campaign to inspire adults to help stop the killing by setting an example for young people to observe the speed limit and not drive drunk.

Speeding on Route 177 is hellacious. I have been frightened many times by someone driving behind me who was obviously angry that I wasn't moving fast enough.

Most of the 26,530 people who drive the road daily are adults who are supposed to be experienced, responsible drivers. They need to begin acting like grown-ups, abide by the rules of the road, set an example for the young and not drive drunk. Only then will our roads be safe.
