Side by Side thanks Laurel community for fundraising support

October 26, 2011

We of Side by Side wish to express our appreciation to the community for supporting our first "Kicks for a Cause" fundraising kickball tournament on Oct. 8, and consequently our work aiding Laurel public elementary schools and their families.

We are very grateful to our sponsors: Academy Ford, B C Electric, Laurel Presbyterian Church, Laurel Park Apartments, Laurelton Court Apartments, Middletowne/The Dona Apartments, Steward Manor Apartments and Joe and Joan Robison.

Thanks also to the teams: Bethany Community Church, Bond Mill Elementary School, First Baptist Church, First United Methodist Church, Kool Kats, Laurel Historical Society, Montpelier Elementary, St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Scotchtown Hills Elementary and West Laurel. The Laurel Police Department and Laurel Elementary School also were set to play, but were not able after we rained out on our original date, Sept. 24.

The Kool Kats edged out Laurel Historical Society to win the competitive division trophy, while First United Methodist beat Montpelier in the finals of the fun division. Montpelier took the "Top School" trophy.

The tournament raised almost $3,500. Steve Mitsak, captain of the Montpelier team, wrote afterward, "Thank you for putting on such a great event on Saturday. I know that the Montpelier team had a great time and it was a lot of fun. I hope you all do this again in the spring and, if you do, Montpelier will participate again and defend our top school title!"

We will definitely do it again next year.
