McPhee continues to impress

Rookie defensive end embracing his role on obvious passing downs

Outside linebacker Terrell Suggs leads the Ravens in sacks with four.

Tied for second are a trio that includes inside linebacker Ray Lewis, defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and rookie defensive end Pernell McPhee.

Despite being limited to obvious passing downs, McPhee, the second of two fifth-round picks in April, has made strides in his development in the unit’s 3-4 schemes.

Coach John Harbaugh complimented McPhee’s progression during his weekly news conference Monday.

“Pernell gives us high energy,” Harbaugh said. “He is a really explosive player. He has embraced that role on third down because that is what he has right now. But he wants more. He is hungry for a bigger role. We tell guys [that] you earn that. You earn that by how you play, and I think he is on track to earn even more time out there. He has done a nice job.”
