Manchurian Rice Company opening Wednesday

And we're off! You won't be able to swing a baguette in Harbor East and Fells Point without hitting a restaurant opening in the next few weeks.

Thursday Bond Street Social has its soft opening in Fells Point, with the big opening scheduled for Friday. But first, Manchurian Rice Co.  will  have its soft opening in the Harbor East spot where the fancy newsstand used to be. The address is 1010 Aliceanna St., and the phone number is 443-438-3528.

Alex Smith, who will be operating the restaurant with his partner George Aligeorgas, describes Manchurian Rice Co. as a gourmet carry-out, serving freshly prepared Chinese, Thai and Japanese food. Smith, who also owns the neighboring Harbor East Delicatessen & Pizzeria, said that food will be cooked to order by chefs at six-wok station and at Japanese teriyaki grill.

A mezzanine for limited on-premise dining has been constructed to enlarge the store's small (1,100 square foot) footprint, but the concept, which Smith hopes to parlay into a possible franchise, is that most people will carry the food out for a quick and healthy everyday meal.

Manchurian Rice, Smith says, will offer the same quality ingredients and focused menu as Chipotle does with Mexican food. Chipotle meanwhile, has recently launched its own Chipotle-inspired Asian restaurant. The first ShopHouse opened in September in Washington’s Dupont Circle.

Manchurian Rice Co. will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday.
