Rex McDowell Named Employee of the Month for September

October 17, 2011

Rex McDowell, an equipment operator at the Harford Waste Disposal Center's compost facility has been selected as the Employee of the Month for September. McDowell was co-nominated by his manager, Jerry Scanlan, as well as a Joyce Kelly, a Harford County resident.

The nomination submitted by Joyce Kelly praised McDowell for his quick response and action that saved her husband from a tragic accident this in June. In her nomination, Kelly stated: "my husband took a load of yard waste up to Tollgate Landfill. He backed up to unload the contents when his truck stalled. My husband went around to the back of the truck and at that moment the truck jumped out of gear and started rolling backward, knocking my husband to the ground. Rex McDowell grabbed my husband by his belt and pulled him to safety before the truck rolled over his head."

As the result of the quick life-saving action taken by McDowell, Ed Kelly sustained only a minor injury to his ankle. For his bravery and action which may very well have saved the life of Mr. Kelly, McDowell was selected as Employee of the Month. McDowell has been employed with Harford County Government since 1990.

Commenting on McDowell's selection as Employee of the Month, County Executive David R. Craig said in a press release, "Rex's actions exemplify a standard of excellence, integrity and distinguished service. Due to his quick thinking and prompt response during a dangerous situation, Rex McDowell undoubtedly saved the life of one of our citizens, while jeopardizing his own safety. On behalf of the people of Harford County I congratulate Rex on receiving this special honor."
