A man was shot several times in the back just before 6 p.m. on a lower level of an underground parking garage in the heart of the University of Maryland, Baltimore and UM Medical Center campus, police said.

The victim, who appeared to be in his mid-40s, is in critical but stable condition at a local hospital, said Detective Kevin Brown, a police spokesman.

After the shooting, the assailant fled, he said. No description of the shooter was available last evening. Officers were still conducting an investigation of the scene an hour after the shooting, Brown said, and surveillance footage will be reviewed.

The University Plaza Garage, which is owned by the university and has an entrance off Redwood Street between Greene and Paca streets, is six floors deep, according to Patricia Fanning, a spokeswoman for the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

The garage is open to the public and is commonly used by patients and visitors of the hospital, Fanning said.

University Square Park, which sits atop the garage, is bordered by the University of Maryland School of Social Work to the south, the School of Law to the north and the University of Maryland Medical Center to the west.

The university enacted a "shelter in place" emergency protocol for people in the social work and law buildings, said Ed Fishel, the news bureau director for the university. Students and staff were asked to stay put while the shooting was investigated and officials felt the area was safe, he said.

By 7:30 p.m., people were freely leaving campus buildings and cars were being allowed out of the parking garage. Fanning said she saw police with shields leaving the parking garage shortly before cars began emerging onto the street.
