Ravens lead best division in NFL?

AFC North only division with three teams with winning records

October 11, 2011|By Edward Lee

ESPN AFC North blogger and former Baltimore Sun beat writer Jamison Hensley pointed out that only the AFC North has three teams with winning records, and it is the only division without a one-win team or a winless team.

Three of the teams rank 1-2-3 in the NFL in total defense (Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers and Ravens, in that order) and the Cleveland Browns are ninth. The Ravens lead the league in fewest points per game allowed, the Steelers are fourth, the Bengals are sixth, and the Browns are 13th.

So it begs the question whether the Ravens belong to the best division in the NFL. Coach John Harbaugh was diplomatic with his answer.

“I don’t know. Are we? You tell me,” he said during his weekly news conference Monday. “It’s a good question. I have always thought it is the best division. Even when these teams, at times when certain teams don’t have great records, and we have to play them, and everybody thinks it is going to be some kind of an easy game. Last year, the Bengals, at the end of the year, it was just a backyard brawl from beginning to end. That’s what you get in this division. I have always thought it is the best division. To make your point there as far as the records and where the defenses are ranked and all that kind of stuff, it’s a strong argument.”
