Festival

The Oakland Mills Cultural Arts Festival will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, at The Other Barn, 5851 Robert Oliver Place. The event features live music, arts and crafts, children's activities, health screenings, food and more. Admission is free. Art exhibit

Group exhibit by members of the Baltimore Watercolor Society is on view through Dec. 15 at the Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House, 10400 Cross Fox Lane in Columbia. A free reception with music and refreshments will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9. Fitness at Slayton House

A six-week session of Bare Fusion fitness classes will be held Mondays through Wednesdays beginning Monday, Oct. 10, at Slayton House, 10400 Cross Fox Lane. Classes include ballet-inspired movements, interval training, Pilates and isometric moves to strengthen, lengthen, and stretch muscles. Cost for the six-week session is $120; $15 for drop-ins. Gardening class

'Once on This Island'

Red Branch Theatre Company presents this Caribbean adaptation of "The Little Mermaid," Oct. 14-29 at the Drama Learning Center, 9130-I Red Branch Road in Columbia. Shows are at 8 p.m. Oct. 14-15, 21-22, 27-29 and 3 p.m. Oct. 16 and 23. Tickets are $18, $16 for students and seniors, $15 for groups of 10 or more and $20 at the door. Art classes

The Columbia Art Center will offer landscape painting classes from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, through Oct. 18. Instructor Chaya Schapiro will focus on the fundamentals of drawing, value and color. A demonstration with oil paint will be held during each class. The cost is $130, $120 for Columbia residents. The center will also offer classes in basic watercolor painting from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, through Nov. 9. The cost is $135, $125 for Columbia residents. Singles social group

The Phoenix Cultural Singles Group, a Columbia social group for those 50 and older, meets from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Sundays at the Oakland Mills Interfaith Center, 5885 Robert Oliver Place in the Oakland Mills Village Center. Book club

An International Book Club sponsored by the Columbia Association's International Exchange and Multicultural Programs meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Columbia Art Center, 6100 Foreland Garth. Around town

English conversation The Howard County Public Library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, offers "Let's Get Together: English Conversation Club." It's a chance for those for whom English is a second language to practice speaking and understanding English in a group setting. The club meets at 9:30 a.m. Mondays and 7:30 p.m. Thursdays.
