A Sri Lankan Supper: Don't miss it

Food = Art, a monthly culinary event at the Creative Alliance presents the Sri Lankan Supper Club on Thursday, Oct. 13.  The evening's host is Charles Village resident S. H. “Skiz” Fernando Jr.

Fernando writes Rice and Curry, a blog about Sri Lankan food and spicy cuisine -- here's his post about the supper club, including the menu. The event is a kickoff for Fernando's unique book tour -- it includes a pop-up restaurant -- in support of his new cookbook, Rice and Curry: the Sri Lankan Cookbook, which will be released later this month.

Here's Fernando on Sri Lankan cuisine: "While sharing many spices and ingredients in common with its neighbor to the north, Sri Lankan food, popularly known as “rice & curry,” also sets itself apart, creating an identity all its own. The coconut figures prominently in Sri Lankan cooking as does the distinctive curry leaf and, of course, a preponderance of chili peppers, which provide its trademark kick.  Fragrant basmati rice provides the centerpiece of any meal, supplemented by various meat, seafood, and vegetable curries, pickles, chutneys, and fresh salads."

Fernando got to show Anthony Bourdain around his home island for the Sri Lanka episode of "No Reservations." You should let him show you what Sri Lankan cooking is all about in Highlandtown.
