Jeff Zrebiec, Ravens beat writer: The Ravens did exactly what an elite team should do to an overmatched opponent. They took control of the game early and broke the Rams’ spirit in the first quarter. Obviously, Joe Flacco connecting with Torrey Smith for three touchdowns could have a huge impact going forward as the rookie was badly in need of a jolt of confidence, and the Ravens sorely needed to establish a downfield threat. It was an ideal tuneup for the Jets showdown next week.
Mike Preston, Ravens columnist: The Ravens did exactly what good teams do to bad teams. They crushed St. Louis and that's a good sign.
Matt Vensel, Sports Blitz blog: So Torrey Smith is a bust, huh? This game was over in the first quarter after Joe Flacco and the rookie teamed up for three touchdown passes.
Chris Korman, Ravens editor: Much credit must go to offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and head coach John Harbaugh. All week, fans worried whether the Ravens would be able to score points with only one proven wide receiver on the field. That, of course, came after a summer where the focus was on running the ball. But instead of trying to play conservatively and win a grind-out game, the coaching staff came up with a daring gameplan that put all the focus on Torrey Smith, who to this point seemed to shrink in the spotlight. But he thrived, and the Ravens hype machine, for better or worse, has been switched back to the on position. Firmly.
Ron Fritz, Head of sports: Overlooked in the offense’s explosion was a vicious afternoon by the defense. That was an incredible display on both sides of the ball.
Kevin Van Valkenburg, staff writer: If you were one of the many, many Ravens fans who were climbing over one another so that you could be the first person to declare Torrey Smith a bust, maybe you should have enough guts to admit you were wrong. In fact, here is his Twitter handle: @TorreySmithWR. If you have enough courage, put your name on your apology. Meanwhile, the Ravens overwhelmed the Rams with emotion and with big plays. Being consistent is part of being a really good team in the NFL, and maybe the Ravens just needed a reminder that you have to bring your best every week. We still don't know how good the Ravens can be, but this was a nice step in the right direction.
